Art has always been a primary focus in my life. I grew up in an "art home" and always had access to supplies, advice, and inspiration. I graduated from Mead High School in Spokane, Washington in 1965. My B.F.A. is from Eastern Washington University. I also studied at Indiana University and Temple University in Philadelphia. I have a Master's degree in art education. I taught art and reading at Medical Lake Middle School in Medical Lake, Washington, for fifteen years and was named Washington State Secondary Art Teacher of the Year in 1993. I taught the Organization and Philosophy of Art Education and Secondary Art Methods at Eastern Washington University. While a teacher, it was necessary to squeeze my own art work in around my job and into the summers. However, my job kept me continually stimulated to do, and be involved in, art. Following the removal of a brain tumor in 1999, I was forced to retire and now have more time to pursue my own work. My art themes are usually personal, often with literary references. A great deal of my work revolves around those people and places that mean great things to me. My personal time is often spent traveling to those places to be with those people. Priest Lake, Idaho, LaPush, Washington and any of my four children and eleven grandchildren are recurrent themes. I work primarily in watercolor and/or colored pencil, often combining the two. I also use watercolor pencils, and occasionally work in air brush. I am also beginning to explore oil. Recently I have been focusing on groupings of related objects in my work and exploring a technique of poured watercolor and colored pencil. |
